Apron Fest 09- Givewaway and Recipe

The Winner is Rachel B From Crazytown, USA. Congrats, Rachel!!

Who doesn't love an apron? My friend and blog designer {yep, this blog you're lookin' at} Deanna is hosting Apron Fest '09 at the Apronista and I am thrilled to participate! There are a lot of Aprons being given away, so go over to her site and click through the links to register for a smorgasboard of kitchen love.

You can start here, though! I'll be giving away this apron to one lucky winner:

Apron 2.1

It is from Tar-jhay {new- not from Goodwill, you'll be happy to know} and I modeled it this morning for these well thought out pictures.

Apron 1.1

Something about an apron draws children to your side.

Apron draws attention.1

Maybe it's because they know you might produce a lovely dinosaur shaped meal soon, just like June Cleaver.

Dinner is served.1

Or maybe it's just the cuteness of this apron! If you'd like to enter a chance for this apron to be yours, just leave a comment telling me your favorite recipe to make that your grandmother made. {Feel free to make something up if you can't think of anything. I'm not a stickler for the rules since I made them and all.} Fine print: The contest will close Friday at noon and be sure to leave your e-mail address with your comment {if you don't have an e-mail linked to your sign in account} so I can contact you when you win!

For you, I have my Grandmother's Banana Nut Bread Recipe- a staple and favorite at her house {still!}.

Grandmother Hart's Banana Nut Bread

Ingredients:
* 3 ripe bananas
* 1 cup of sugar
* 1 egg
* 1 1/2 cup flour
* 1 cup chopped pecans
* 1 tsp. baking soda
* 1 tsp salt
* 1/2 cup melted butter

Directions:
* Cream bananas and sugar together (this works really well with a potato masher if you have one handy)
* Add the rest of the ingredients
* Mix well
* Bake at 350 degrees for 45 in loaf pan {for muffins, bake 20- 24 minutes}

Isn't that easy peasy? It's also delicious.

Cut into dinosaur shapes and enjoy!

OK, I'm going to cheat a little :) When I was little, I remember my grandfather cooking more than I remember my grandmother cooking. And my dad tells me that my grandfather was good at decorating cakes. I don't have any memory of my grandfather decorating cakes (he died when I was little - sometime before 5th grade), so I'll take my dad's word for it. My dad says my cake decorating talent must of skipped a generation because he can't do it. So I like to think I'm channeling my grandfather when I'm decorating cakes. And a cute apron would be most useful when I make icing and decorate because I inevitably make a mess!
And I think you know my email address :)!

How cute is that apron?!!? I must own it, I must burn all my baked goods in it and I must dust all the dirt under my rugs in it! I hope I win!

Hillary, you crack me up with the dinosaur nuggets! I would love an apron!

Oh MAN! I really wanted those laundry piles! ;)

My favorite recipes from my grandmother are her traditional Syrian recipes. They've been handed down through generations (and have remained the same since my great-grandmother learned them before coming to the US), and it makes me so happy to be able to carry them on for my kids!

That apron is adorable! I would love to win it! Although my grandmother never gave me the recipe, I loved her macaroni and cheese growing up. even as a kid I hated the boxed kind, and she always added cream of mushroom soup in. Homemade Macaroni and cheese is one of my favorite things to make!

You are not going to believe this- but I most remember really simple things like mashed potatoes, steamed artichokes and strawberry shakes! Once she made real taffy too! I do so love my Grammie
Thank you!

My grandma (the first Julia) made an old-fashioned butter roll that I LOVED. It's kind of like a bread pudding/custardy thing. I NEED that apron Hill- that's all I'll say about it.

Well now, this is really a very cute apron! My grandmother makes the best hare with red cabbage and potatoe dumplings. This might not sound so appealing to you. But, in Germany it's a delicatesse.
Thanks for the chance to win.

Ooohhh, pretty! I've had to think really hard on this one. My grandmother makes a really good Bloody Mary, but that might not be the best one to declare as my favorite. My great-grandmother, though, makes the best sugar cookies. I have the receipe, but still can't make them as well as she does.

Cute Apron! I am a friend of your semi relative, Mary. I love to make my grandmothers fried cornbread! Yum!!

What an adorable apron!
My whole family's favorite recipe from my grandmother was her brownies. They're called "Grandma's brownies" in our homes. They are a chocolate brownie with a marshmallow layer on top of that and then a chocolate layer on top of that. SO GOOD!! Since she's been gone, only my sister is brave enough to try to replicate them. They were so special. (and yummy!!)

Great Giveaway!
My grandmother used to make the absolute BEST potato soup. I can't recreate it. There was no recipe. But I will keep trying - I want my son to at least know what her food tasted like...other than a few pictures, he will never know her. This will be my way of keeping her around.

Darling apron!

It's a toss up for me on my favorite grandmother recipe. One might seem silly to some, but she could make the absolute best pot of beans ever! Try as I might - and beans are easy - mine are never as good as hers.

And my other favorite was her pineapple pie. Which reminds me that I haven't made it in a while....

:)

I love, love, love that apron!!!

Ok, one of my favorite childhood recipes my grandma made was called "new peas and potatoes." Basically you pick a bunch of new peas and potatoes from your garden and then cover them in a white sauce. Oh it is ridiculously good and simple. Now that we are trying our own hand at gardening I'm going to have to try it.

My fave recipe from my grandmother is her Pound Cake. It is always a huge hit. And really, how much more southern can you get than pound cake?
Btw, that banana bread recipe sounds delicious! If I hadn't just had a piece of banana bread, I would seriously be craving it.

I love this apron!!! It is just my style. I am already imagining baking things with it in the kitchen! I remember my grandmother making homeade fudge for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Man it was good! I miss her everyday. She gave us the recipe but she always just threw things together and so it is not the same!

so super cute! for some reason i prefer all my food to be bone-shaped or maybe that's janie! My memaw used to make a delicious Lane Cake with lots of layers and gooey caramel-ly icing! Of course, near the end she got the sugar and salt mixed up, but we smiled and said it was yummy nonetheless!
also, you should host an apron swap!

My favorite recipe that my grandma made has to be peanut butter fudge. Every Christmas she'd make it and pour it in a big pie pan and we'd all cut off chunks to eat. After she died I scoured her recipes for it...she must have had it memorized because I can't find it!

Love the apron. Oooh, I hope I win!

OK! This is going to make you want to give me that APRON. It's TOO cute to not be a part of my kitchen and on my body. :)

My meme is cajun-born..so we grew up with many delectable treats...but this one was always by far the family favorite:

Meme's Gumbo

start out with a nicely browned reux (lightly brown flour in the oven)

add your crab stock (saved from when you boiled the crab earlier)

add all your favorite ingredients...annnd shrimp, annnd crab...scrumptious.

The thing I love to make like my grandmother is bacon. I know that sounds weird, but she always bought the big box of ends and pieces bacon and scrambled it in a big cast iron skillet. I was fascinated because I'd never seen anyone cook bacon that way before. Everything always tasted great at her house, and so every once in a while I find a Piggly Wiggly and get that big box of bacon and scramble away in her memory.

Good Idea and I love the apron! Below is my favorite recipe that my grandma made.

Grandma’s Chicken Meatballs

3 tbsp. butter, to fry meatballs
2 cups chopped chicken (I used canned chicken)
2-3 cups chicken broth
1 small onion chopped
Cornstarch to thicken broth (I use canned broth)
1/3 cup of water
Egg noodles
2-3 eggs

Directions:
Mix together, stuffing mix, water, chopped chicken and onion. Add two to three eggs until the mix sticks together to form into balls. Fry the meatballs in the butter until brown on all sides. In a separate pot bring chicken broth to a boil and thicken with cornstarch. Add the chicken broth gravy to the frying pan with the meatballs and let the broth simmer for 20 minutes. Serve meatballs with egg noodles.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your picture holding the dino nuggets. LOVE IT. =)

And my favorite recipe was passed from my dad's mom to my stepmom to me -- and I actually don't know the exact recipe, but in our family it is known as "ducky roast" (though it's just roast beef) because I called my grandma "Duck" and I was her "ducky."

Anyways, does that count? ;)

My grandmother wasn't much of a cook (sugar cookie mix out of a box) but was an absolutely amazing seamstress. I so wish she were here to show her this adorable apron - she would love it!! My mother didn't teach me how to sew, so I only hope that it is my grandmother who is looking down and encouraging me in my sewing endeavors. Thanks for the chance to win! I have fallen in love with this apron!

My favorite recipe from my Grandma is Sugar Cookies...she taught my Dad how to make them and he taught me.

The cookies are different, because they puff up, almost like a yeast-raised dough, and they stay chewy. Ooooh I want to bake some right now!

Of course, the oven is off limits until the triple digit heat gives way to cooler temps.

I would monogram that apron if I won it!! Love ya, Mom

That apron is SO cute! My favorite recipe of hers was Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup. Wow and yum. She always had oreos in a jar for her grandkids but she hated them so she was never tempted to eat them herself!

Hey Hillary! Love the apron! I am going to make your banana bread recipe today (that is, if this baby girl naps)!
My favorite it blueberry pie...
-5-6 cups of blueberries
-3/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup A.P. flour
- squirt of lemon
Mix, put in uncooked pie crust, cover with another pie crust, crimp edges, cut some slits in top and sprinkle sugar on top ( a little milk brushed on top makes the sugar stick). Bake at 350 for about 40 minutes...yum!

I love love love love this apron! Absolutely GORGEOUS! Here is a recipe for my grandmothers aebleskivers:
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon lukewarm milk

2 tablespoons active dry yeast

3 eggs, at room temperature

2 tablespoons sugar

6 tablespoons butter, melted, plus additional for buttering the pan

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Juice and zest of one-half lemon

1 3/4 cups flour

Powdered sugar

Tart berry jam

1. In a large bowl, whisk together the warm milk and yeast; set aside until the mixture begins to bubble, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the eggs and sugar until combined, then add the butter, vanilla, lemon juice and zest. Finally, add the flour and whisk until the batter is smooth.

2. Cover the bowl loosely with plastic wrap and set aside in a warm place until the batter is at least doubled in size, about 30 minutes. The batter will be thick and slightly sticky.

3. Heat the aebleskiver pan over medium heat, then brush each mold lightly with melted butter. When the butter just begins to brown, pour the batter so each mold is filled almost to the rim. (Start with the middle mold as it receives the least amount of heat and remember the sequence in which you fill each mold in the pan, as the aebleskivers will need to be turned in that order.)

4. When a solid crust has formed on the bottom of each mold, reduce the heat slightly and use a skewer to loosen and turn each aebleskiver by one-third. As the crust continues to form, turn each by one-third again. Finally, turn each mold again so the entire crust is formed. Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook until the interior of each aebleskiver is cooked through. A toothpick or skewer inserted should come out clean.

5. Use a skewer to remove the aebleskivers from the pan. Plate in arrangements of three; sprinkle with powdered sugar and top with tart berry jam. Serve immediately.

Okay... this is super lame, but my favorite thing my grandma made for me was her grilled cheese. I loved it so much, because unlike my mom putting a plain slice of American cheese on it, Grandma put a thick slice of Velveeta, and that just made all the difference in the world! Thanks so much for the chance to win your great apron!

My favorite recipe isn't a favorite recipe at all. My Gma Bush used to always put butter on sandwiches instead of mayonaise. Well, I should rephrase that. It wasn't real butter- it was Margarine. Remember that word? I haven't heard it used in years (except by my anitquated family)but it reminds me of watching her assemble 25 sandwiches at 5:30 in the morning. She and Gpa Bush always fed the men that worked in their fields. Every once in a while, I will still get a "hankerin" for a butter sandwich with ham, tomatoes and lettuce. No cheese, thank you. I used all the calories on the margarine!
So maybe that knocks me out of the running for the adorable Tarjay apron (does Target really need to be called anything else?) but it probably wouldn't go around my fat butt anyway! lol

Funny you should ask about recipes my grandmother made that I am making! We are in the midst of cucumber season here so I have made Million Dollar Relish and Seven Day Pickles. Both are old recipes that she made.

I also make her Kuffle cookies (crescents of brown sugar/cinnamon/raisin goodness) and her kraut perogies (sweet dough filled with cabbage and ground beef baked and served with ketchup).

I had to laugh about aprons drawing children, my kids love to play with my aprons so I have to be careful not to leave them in reach if I want to use them!

Love this idea and love the apron! My grandmother was fabulous in the kitchen and I try to make something at least once a week that she made because she so loved sharing recipes! Here is one that uses eggplant and zucchini!

Ratatouille

1 pound ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 T. oil
2 med. Zucchini, sliced
1 med. Eggplant, peeled and cubed
1 green pepper, chopped
4 tomatoes, peeled and cut up
2 t. salt
¼ t. black pepper
¾ c. shredded cheddar cheese

Cook crumbled beef and onion in oil for 5 mins. Add vegetables, salt and pepper. Cook 10 min, stirring often. Put in casserole dish and top with cheese. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake 15 to 30 minutes longer.

Here is another family favorite.

GM’s Corn Pudding

3 eggs
½ c. sugar
2 T. flour
1 t. salt
2 cups corn
2 cups milk
¼ stick butter or margarine

Beat eggs, add sugar and flour. Mix well, add corn, milk and salt. Melt butter in baking dish, grease bottom and sides. Pour in corn mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until firm.

Fingers crossed! A new apron would make for a lovely wedding gift too! ; )

So love that apron!! It has a great old but new look to it.

My dad is a great cook and learned from my grandmother but I only remember her making peanut butter pie. It's just the typical recipe with cream cheese, sugar, peanut butter and cool whip in a graham cracker crust but it was so good.

It's funny to me that there is just something about the people we love cooking for us. I think we can't duplicate those tastes because their love is baked in. But you know our grandchildren one day will be able to taste our love and remember the things we made them one day.

First, I love the apron! Very cute! A favorite memory is the tradition of baking Christmas sugar cookies with my "Oma." My Mom has since taken over so in time it will be my turn....in a LONG time! :)

Thank you for entering me in your generous giveaway! I love that apron it is so pretty. My favorite recipe of my Meme's to make is French Apple Pie. It is a double crust apple pie with raisins and a glaze on the top crust. Yum!

Have a great day and thank you again!

Oh I love your apron and would be so thrilled to win it!! I have so many lovely memories of baking with my Grandmother as a child, she was well known for her pastries. Her pies were legend in the area, I have not acquired her talent but appreciate all she did to teach me what she loved.
