Last week my MIL, SIL {that's mother-in-law and sister-in-law if you are behind the times} and I went to My Sprited Art for Mother's Day.
What? Your calendar says it's August. Oh, yes. Well those are just details.
Carrie {SIL} and I gave Jason's mom {and Carrrie's- have you got the family tree, yet?} a girls trip to paint for Mother's Day and just now got around to following through on our end of the deal. Did you notice that we got a nice trip in with it, as well? Those are the best kind of presents: the ones where you get to share in the fun!
I've done these painting classes before and love them! Have you done one? They are everywhere and are called all different things {sips and strokes, etc}. What is the name of yours?
Our teacher, who was great, assured us that what originally looked like a termite would eventually turn into angel. Here is my MIL, Connie, with her termite/ angel in the beginning.
And sure enough- termite no more! Here is my finished angel:
And our group shot. I love how everyone's painting ends up looking differently. I've always wondered though if enough people do these classes then all the home interiors around town are going to have the same painting in them. Doncha think?
After this class- all week- I have had "My Angel is a Centerfold" stuck in my head. And that's okay because I love that song! There are certain songs that always made me get up and dance and that was one of them.
In college, we hung out at a few fine establishments where one might partake of an adult beverage {okay- fine- BAR} and the best bands were the ones who would play these amazing 80s songs that we all grew up with. I would throw my beverage down, grab a friend and run to the dance floor. Anyone else?
Here is a list of my favorites {click on these videos at your own risk}:
1. My Angel is a Centerfold- you have to love the "na na" part. And the whistling at the end is bound to be stuck in your head.
2. 867-5309/Jenny- Niiii eeee iiiiii eeeee eyen
3. Jessie's Girl- teen angst at it's best. And the only use of "moot" in a song that I can recall.
4. Dixieland Delight- I know- Country- Not me at all MOST of the time. But I am from Alabama, people. And the fast (latter) part of this song is wonderful. And they mention the Mason Dixon line which I love. {Only later in life did I realize that this North and South dividing point is in Pennsylvania.} And I honestly love almost every Alabama song. It might be a pre-requisite when you live here.
5. Come on Eileen- I don't know why I love this song so. Other than the duuurrr aahhhh duuuurr aahhhh part, it's kind of bland, but it's a great one to dance to.
6. Karma Chameleon- As a child of the 80s, this has to be on your list of favorites. No one knows what it means, stands for or even the actual words. And that's okay. Because no one understands Boy George, either, so it all fits together well.
Let me know your favorites! What did I miss?
OK- I'm off to update my iPod. I need a little more keytar in my playlists.

Wowza - now I've got that "Angel in a centerfold" song in my head! My 80's faves include "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Mickey." Great painting, btw! I'm so impressed with your ability! Mine would have looked like my 2 year-old did it...
See? I told you my angel had a big head! I had a great time anyway. And she is proudly displayed in the living room.
Wow. You threw a lot at us at one time! First off, I llloooovve the angel paintings, and, second, what kind of cosmopolitan city do you live in that offers such things?---it occurs to me that I don't know where you're from! I'm in a teeny, tiny college town in the rural South. My son went to Art Camp this summer but they don't offer fun stuff like this for grown-ups!
ANYWAY, Yes, I totally love every song that you mentioned, and have the additional shame of actually wanting to be an angel who was a centerfold just so I could say HA! to an ex-boyfriend! With great relief I can say I never achieved said raunchy dream :-) Off to watch some old music videos....
Have a great Friday and a great weekend!
I still can't help but to love the Boy George songs. And, I totally want to go to one of those painting classes! That looks like so much fun!
Mrs. Nurse Boy
I am so not artistic when it comes to painting so those look professional to me. I would like to learn to paint better though.
I have been on a "Don't Stop Believin'" kick lately. Have listened to it every day for the last week or so. Not sure what that's all about. I could also listen to Madonna all day long, especially all her 80's hits...You must be my lucky star, cause you shine on me where ever you are!!
I'm totally downloading My Angel is a Centerfold today! And I LOVE Come On Eileen! I actually already have it in my iPod.
Love your angel pics! :)
Loved your angel pics...almost enough to motivate myself to haul my daughter to 'the city' that's over an hour away and find a similar experience...almost :) I think I have some paint in the storage closet from past craft inspired moments...maybe we'll sit out back and paint some trees :)
Oh...and the 80's song ~ "I Will Survive". I guess you could say it is one of my theme songs ;-)
How fun! We have Corks & Canvas here. My friend and I plan to go in late September.
I love all those songs!
Well, this is going to come as a big surprise to you, I think. But . . . I don’t like the angel song.
I know!
What happened is this: I got a cheap-o DJ for my wedding reception, and I told him I wanted 80s music. He didn’t clarify what I meant, and he played a bunch of stuff that I didn’t know or particularly love (because, hello? At your wedding, you only want to encounter things you love! said the bridezilla…). Including – you guessed it – My Angel is a Centerfold. I’ve never seen Angel the same way since then.
However, I will attempt to redeem myself by saying that I love that Rick Springfield uses the word “moot.” And I cannot name a single song by Alabama that I don’t love. Alabama (along with, sadly, Air Supply, The Monkees and Lionel Richie) provided the soundtrack to my childhood. How could I not love them? Although…that Randy lead singer dude always looks so angry!
As for my faves, I particularly loved the year of 1989. It had good tunes.
She's a brick house....not sure if that was an 80s song or not. But all the GREAT cover bands in Auburn played that one....and Sweet Home alabama. What a mix. Did ya'll have Mel & the party hats or velcro pygmes??? Those were two of my favorite bands. And there was one where the lead singer would come out dressed as superman in the last set...but I cannot remember the name. Thanks for the great music to finish my friday off!!! Have a great weekend.
Your angel looks GREAT! Ours in called Paint and Pals and I've only been once.
I used to sing "come on Ellen" to my sweet roomate :) and my fav was a little cheap trick..."I want you to want me!"
Ack! Come on Eileen! My freshman year in college, our next door neighbors in the dorm (who were on the end, so we were the only ones directly next to them) would play that song ALL THE TIME at TOP VOLUME! Those violins at the beginning make my spine curl to this day.
Look, look! I actually logged in with my Google Account now that I've figured out what it is again!
My blood runs cold, my memory has just been sold,na na na na na my angel is a centerfold! Cute!! Actually I may have just made up those words, I do that, when I forget them...:)
You can't forget Power of Love by Huey Lewis and The News, Sunglasses at night, or U2's Pride.
LOVE your blog, I am now following. Yes, we have a Sips N Strokes in Ttown now, but I have never been. I'll have to try it!! Looks like fun!
all those songs make me feel like I'm back at the Porch -- what fond memories!
Oh yeah, you can't beat the 80s! "I Want Candy" always got me dancing, as well as "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "We've Got the Beat."
too fun!
I will add- "I'd stop the world and melt with you".
P.S. I LOVE your angel- yours has a little extra soul glow. :)
