The Other Mama's Birthday Bash- Day 3- Design Chicky Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed. Random.org says the winner is commenter #46- Candace from The Nelson Clan! {Also one of my suite mates in the sorority house in college and an amazing photographer!} Congrats, Can!

Nineteen ninety wasn't good to most of us fashion-wise. Shoulder pads were still hanging around, jeans were acid washed and tight rolled and the plastic t-shirt clip thing {what were those called?} accentuated your hips. This year was particularly tough on me because I was in 7th grade and had just transferred to a big public middle school from my tiny private school that had a strict uniform policy. I'm pretty sure the policy at the small school included no writing on shirts {so the big BENETTON shirt was out} and pants/ skirts to your knees {thank goodness for JAMS!}.

When I made the switch, I not only had solid colored, plain shirts as the WHOLE of my wardrobe, but also I had NO working knowledge of fashion {if you could call it that in 1990} At All.

Then the big day came. School pictures. Fall of seventh grade. You will be forever memorialized in the yearbook with this decision.

And I think this calls for another edition of:
A Few Pointers to myself in 1990
Dear 1990 self,
Please get out your Trapper Keeper because there are several issues that need to be addressed here.

hill- 7th grade school pic

1. Never, NO NEVER go fishing in your mom's closet to find something "cool" to wear for school pictures. Your plain t-shirts would have suited you fine. Captain Stubing called ship-to-shore from the Love Boat and wanted his gold-buttoned monstrosity back.
2. A good tip is to not style your hair in a manner that leads to a headache.
3. Bangs will never again need to be separated into "half up and half down". There is no need for that. In the future, you will constantly wear sunglasses on your head to give yourself some volume up there, but for now, PUT. DOWN. THE FINAL NET.
4. Fruit should not be worn on the ears.
5. Refuse to take any picture with lasers in the background. I know that Haley's Comet is still all the rage, but one should not try to catch multiple versions of this in a photo. I cannot blame you for this, but please be aware of your surroundings.
6. It's okay to love Saved by the Bell. Zack Morris is still very funny and the show will define your generation. Just don't timeout anyone in public. Ever.
7. Don't lose that Hypercolor shirt next year. Your mom will be SO mad at you because it was a very pricey $29.

Alright, hop down off that director's chair and get back to biology. You will have to dissect a frog this year and I'm sorry that it's smelly.
And good luck with the hair. Remember: work with the natural gravitational pull, not against it.
Hugs,
Your future self

Sometimes we all just need a makeover, right? A fresh new start! A new perspective!
Well, I'm so excited about my giveaway today if this is you.

At Blissdom, I met one of the nicest and most helpful blog designers who quickly became a friend. When I started talking about a re-haul for my little internet home, she helped me navigate through the murky waters of what to include, what to avoid and how to make it all come together nicely. I can't tell you enough wonderful things about Deanna {who also writes The Apronista and Domestic Chicky}; can't you tell she's one talented chicky?

So, as one of my favorite things to do {blogging} with my favorite blog designer, Deanna has generously offered her services for a giveaway!

Today's giveaway is a Blog Makeover from Design Chicky!

Deanna is generously offering to design one lucky winner a Custom Header and a Blog Button that will work with any platform {Wordpress, Typepad, Blogger}. Isn't this a fun gift for all you bloggers out there? It's a $75 value and you will absolutely love working with her!

Oh. My. Word. There have to be rules.
To enter to win:
* Leave a comment in the comments section and tell me what you would purchase if you won. To do this, click the word "COMMENTS" directly below this post. Then type in the big blank section and click post. Easy peasy.
* You have to leave your e-mail address with your comment. If you know your e-mail is attached to your Blogger account, then that's fine, too. Want to do this and don't know how? Read my quick tutorial on it here.
* One entry per comment.
* But you can gain another entry by becoming a blog follower and then leaving a comment to tell me so. If you already follow this blog, then you can click for another comment to let me know that. Please read my view of becoming a blog follower and what it is if you have any questions.
* Or you can Tweet about this giveaway and reference the post and leave a comment to tell me you did. I'm @theothermama and Deanna is @DomesticChicky just FYI.
* Or you can write about it on your blog and link to this post and leave a comment to tell me you did. {WOW that's FOUR ways to enter!!} {And a max of 4- not 4 per day.}
* One winner will be chosen at random on Saturday at noon and will be notified via e-mail.
* Please let me know if you have any questions at all about entering.
* Each giveaway is separate, so if you entered Monday's great Homemade Gourmet giveaway or Tuesday's awesome Lisa Leonard giveaway, you need to also enter this one separately.
Both giveaways are still open until, so head on over there and sign up, if you haven't already!

This post is linked to the always-fun Works for Me Wednesday at We Are THAT Family and Show us your Life- School Pictures Edition at Kelly's Korner.
And if you want more of the "A Few Pointers" series {since I just decided to call it that}, check out:
A Few Pointers to Myself in 1988
A Few Pointers to the Squad in 1993

Thanks again for playing along with my birthday bash! Now go enter! Someone has to win and it will be you... well one of you at least.

oooh...it looks like I'm first! I could SO use a blog overhaul, or at least a header. I might actually post more if it inspired me.

I have been trying to figure out how to do some things on my blog for a while, but that blasted HTML is giving me fits. I want a new header and a menu bar across the top, three columns instead of two...I could go on and on!

Oh MY WORD. Best school photo ever! My grandma called. She wants her shirt back.

HAHAHAHA!

Now off to pray that NO ONE EVER finds my school pictures and posts them!

I need to call you......

I have played with my blog trying to tweak it. I am ok with it for now, but I would love it if someone who KNEW what they were doing could fix it up for me!

Love your post as always!

I remember BEGGING my mom for a hypercolor shirt. She finally caved, and I wore it proudly to my first day of high school as a freshman. I thought I was so cool as I strutted the hallways that first August day. It was pretty hot and there was only air conditioning in the classrooms, so the hallway was blazing. But that was ok, cause I looked hot in my hypercolor. And people were noticing me! Success!
When I got to my first class of the day, one of my friends pulled me aside and told me why people were looking. Seems the shirt was only hitting the girls in the front, so I had 2 HUGE tan circles on my chest, and the rest of the shirt was still lavender. I looked like I was wearing my bra on the outside. Needless to say, I never wore the hypercolor shirt to school again. Just thought I'd share. You are the first person in years to remind me of hypercolor!!! lol

That post made me laugh so hard! I sent it to my husband - which I only do with posts that are hilarious because his attention span is short haha!

My blog looks exactly the same way it does when blogspot set it up for me - I'm not very good with these things! It'd be fun to have something special on my page.

I need a 'theme' or 'vision' for my blog and having a complete overhaul would be the best thing for me now. I am starting to get into so many amazing things in the blogger world that a *new* blog face would be just the face lift I need to tackle everything I want to do.

And that was a fabulous picture...fruit earrings? Priceless.

Love this blog! I think we all had the same fashionless-sense that you did in middle school. And we all have the photos with the laser background to prove it! Here's something really funny-- my mother moved all my school pictures that were in frames into an upstairs guest bedroom that is NEVER used. When I asked her why she told me that they are ridiculous photos and doesn't think they need to be on display in the house. How nice!?!? I really felt the love from her that day!

Love the picture - and I have one eerily similar to this from 1990:) I definitely need a bloggy makeover - new header, for sure. (and possibly some technical help with wordpress since my icons in the sidebar now have weird boxes around them - sigh).

Happy, happy birthday again!

My favorite is the fruit earrings. Now I have to confess, I still have silver earrings (that I still sometimes wear!) that are dragonflies. They're not large ... but I probably need someone to stop me.

I also need Design Chicky to give me a total blog makeover. That's what I'd purchase.

Oh and I'd follow you but I prefer to come here and read because your blog is just so cute! It's a happy place. Much happier than Google reader.

PS. I now understand the 1993 cheer uniform. I'll award extra points for trying to be unique with custom suits.
