A Tale of a Turtle and a Hamburger*

Once upon a time, there was a mommy turtle who lived with her turtle husband and turtle family in their nice turtle pond with rocks, mud and slime.
The mommy turtle knew these living conditions well, understood the terrain and felt like she had a good grasp on what all it meant to be a turtle. Things were messy, thrown together and sometimes rough, but she liked a life with turtles. Her baby turtles were a little bumpy on the outside, but they were soft and cuddly on the inside and when they needed to be. Best of all, they loved their mommy turtle.

Then one day, someone told the mommy turtle that there would be a HAMBURGER moving in with their family.

WHAT? A HAMBURGER? "Surely you jest" said the mommy turtle {because she had been to turtle college and enjoyed British terminology to sound smarter than the other turtles}. Hamburgers do NOT live with turtles. Doesn't it know it will get Eaten ALIVE here?

But despite her confusion and inability to understand how in the WORLD a Hamburger could be coming to live with her family, it was true.

In a few months, the turtles will be invaded.
Baby Girl Dunham 001

And surely they will welcome this Hamburger with open arms.

Baby Girl Dunham 001

Because even if she isn't a turtle, she'll fit right in.
The turtle family has always been a fan of beef, carbs and anything smothered in cheese.

To be continued...

Here's more of what we saw:

Baby Girl Dunham 003

And since I can read lips, here's what I'm pretty sure she was saying:

Baby Girl Dunham 003

Jason, the boys and I are happy to announce that we are expecting a GIRL brand of baby.
Holy Hairbows! We don't what we're going to do with one, but we have a few months to figure it out.

Tips? Advice? Warnings?
Money tree for clothes?
I'll take them.

* The "turtle" and the "hamburger" are what the ultrasound technicians look for to determine the gender of your baby. I won't pull out medical terms here because I'd be on all kinds of spam lists, but I'm pretty sure you can figure out which one belongs to which gender.

I'm so excited! You know my girls are going to LOVE having a baby doll cousin to dress up and love on.

Hopefully having older brothers will stifle the "drama" that tends to come with little girls.

Oh Yea!!! Congratulations!! Well I have 2 girls and right now for me, at their ages almost 8 and 4 my advice is pick the battles you care about winning. Well and that really applies to all children but especially for girls. And just because she's a girl doesn't mean she'll want girly things. Carley refuses to wear dresses and loves everything her brother does. And Isabel is very girly but still loves to get down and dirty and play rough. She will turn out perfectly how she should be with all the turtles.

How exciting! And I love the turtle/hamburger story. You are so creative and hilarious!

Advice for having a baby girl. Yes, a money tree will help if possible. You may have the urge to buy everything pink since you have been in a sea of boy colors for years. Before having AK, I hated pink, but it seems like that is what I am drawn to when picking out anything for her. You are going to have a ball and the boys will love their baby sister and want to protect and take care of her from the start! Brooks has never had any aggression/jealous rages toward her and I think it is b/c she's a girl.
Congratulations!! :)

Congratulations! I know the joys and fear that comes with raising a girl or 3!! Dresses, shoes, hairbows, tempers, attitudes, etc. but they are all worth it (well until they turn 9 and you want to send them to live with the gypsies!).

So excited for you! Girls are a whole 'nother beast, truly, but they are a good sort of beast. They will actually sit still for two minutes put together. And they WANT to talk to you. And, oh, the CLOTHES!! Plus, a girl with older brothers? She's just perfection.

A GIRL!!! Yeah!!!!

We have two of each, and I can assure there is a world of difference, but it's a difference you are going to love. Calmness. the ability to think a thought through to the end. Emotional upheaval (that doesn't come until much later). Barbie Shoes. American Girl Dolls. Pink! Bows! GLITTER!!!

Hillary, your tweet gave me a heart attack. Being way to paranoid about baby issues over here...I misintepreted what you meant. What a JOY to come and read your adorable post. Congrats--she will be a blessing and an adventure, just like your turtles!!

I'm so happy for you!

Oh congratulations! I knew immediately when I read "hamburger" what you were going to say! That little girl will love having older brothers with cute friends coming over all the time. I always wished I had an older brother so I could rub elbows with the cute older boys in school (some of whom were in your class at HA).

Oh, Hillary, congratulations! What exciting news. I have no tips to give you as I am unfamiliar with girls. I mean *I* am a girl but it's been a long time since I was a little, itty, bitty one. I know your little girl will be well-loved by all of you!

OMG LOL! I had heard about turtles but had not heard the hamburger reference! Even though I only had 1 boy before the arrival of our lovely girl, I can say it has been different. It's amazing how different they are even from an early age. More than being different people different. Cate gravitates toward "girly" things. Though she's not above "pew-pew" when the occasion calls for it.

Kelly said...

Congrats! We had a girl first, so we were unsure what do with boy babies. Grant is 3 now, we've all survived.

Just think how cute she's going to be with 2 big brothers to protect her!

Congrats!!! Girls are SO much fun and you are going to love having a daughter to do all the girly stuff with!

My daughter is such a girly girl and I love it! She can run with the boys too!

Congrats again! SO excited for you!!!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you. I can cleary recall the doctor explaining how the hamburger looks different from the turtle during my ultrasound with Melody. She said the image of our little hamburger was so good that it was going to enter the Wall of Hamburgers at the office to use as examples. So proud.

I'm so happy for y'all. Life will change for sure, now! :) Girls are awesome and now you won't have to duck when you're changing a diaper.

I knew what you were going to say when I read the title! Remember that you are a hamburger too! And, they don't all have to be frilly! Mine isn't-she says she would rather play with boys than girls anyday. Hopefully that means I can escape having to deal with the mean girls-but she will be friends to all of the boys so her dating life will stink. Which is also great for me! Win Win!
You will have so much fun seeing how the boys will be protective of her! AWWW!! So happy for you!

Amy said...

Girls are so much fun!!! We'll have lunch one day and I'll fill you in :) Jason, on the other hand, really has nothing to learn b/c as soon as she appears, he'll immediately be wrapped around her finger and will do whatever she wants :) Girls figure that out REALLY early!

So happy for you!

I'm so happy for you! :) I know you wanted a Hamburger. I have no words of wisdom as I have a turtle myself and never want a hamburger. :)

Hillary! I am so excited for you!!!! I was confused with the title because I thought you were going to show that god awful meatloaf in the shape of the turtle that everyone and their mother has been posting about the last couple weeks. I was going to link it, but it's way gross. But YAY, I'm so happy that it's a GIRL!! Could I use any more effing exclaimation points!??!

Girls are a lot of fun! Having four boys and only one girl... I tell people all the time who say, "Bless your heart with all those boys, blah, blah, blah..." My four boys wear me out physically. My ONE girl brings me to my knees EMOTIONALLY. Every. Single. Day. Congratulations!

Elizabeth said...

Turtles and hamburgers, eh? I've had many an ultrasound and that is a new one and a hysterical one at that! Congrats! I have 3 girls and one little baby boy. Girls are so fun bc I really get them--the drama, the emotionality of life in general, how much they need encouragement and cuddling. I just really love them because I am just as crazy as they are:) Tell you what-you learn me about boys and I will return the favor:) Congrats, I'm sure she'll be as funny as her mother and as cute as her brothers:)

Yay girl! Our DLG (for Daddy's Little Girl, of course) is so not like big brother, but I think I told you some of it last year. Intense eye contact from the get-go. Loves to cuddle, but also wants to see what's going on, seems to share better, too (mostly.) But I do get a bit tired of pink.....
